He is a Professor of Botany with main interest in Functional Plant Anatomy. His research focused on plant anatomy and taxonomy with special interest in applied aspects of plant anatomy, a structure-function relationships study. An aspect of his research involves studies of the effect of aphid and other suctorial insects feeding on long/short–term uptake and loading of photoassimilates in leaves under normal or controlled environments. Another aspect of his research involves elucidation of functional leaf anatomical characters involved in the characterisation of C 3 and C 4 photosynthetic groups in plants. This is in addition to the unraveling of the responses (Morphological and anatomical) of plant species to changes in environmental conditions. Prof Saheed Adekilekun is also involved in utilization of stable morphological and anatomical characters of the plant in achieving taxonomic delimitation of different plant taxa. In his research activities, he utilises different techniques which includes Molecular Biology Techniques, Light, Electron, Fluorescence and Confocal Microscopy Techniques.
